Established in 1960 by a group of local physicians, South Miami Hospital continues to provide superior patient care to the citizens of Miami Dade County. Currently licensed for 467 beds, South Miami Hospital has been recognized by the Florida Sterling Council as a Governor's Sterling Award recipient for 2010. This prestigious honor recognizes organizations in Florida that meet or exceed the highest standards for organizational performance. South Miami Hospital was one of three healthcare organizations in the state to receive this award. The hospital has also been recognized as a Magnet Hospital for Nursing Excellence in 2004 and again in 2008, by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, and is on Solucient's list of top 100 hospitals in the country, based on several quality indicators. The Center for Robotic Surgery at South Miami Hospital, using the da Vinci Robotic System, offers a revolutionary approach to minimally invasive surgery, capitalizing on the latest operating room advances to improve patient care.

The Imaging Services Department provides state of the art diagnostic imaging, including a 64 slice CT scanner with software for reduced radiation dose imaging, two 1.5 Tesla MRI scanners, state-of-the-art Ultrasound, Women's Imaging, Nuclear Medicine and PET services, as well as therapeutic Nuclear Medicine services. Studies such as Coronary and Carotid CT Angiography, Cardiac MRI, and Fetal as well as Female Pelvic MRI are among the many imaging procedures provided.

Onsite Interventional Radiology services are available including Uterine Fibroid Embolization within the Hospital's Center for Women and Infants. The Imaging Department of South Miami is the recipient of the 2011 Press Ganey Summit Award for consistently exceeding patients' expectations during their visits.

South Miami Hospital is currently expanding and renovating its Emergency Center, Surgical Services and Imaging Department to provide the very best patient care to the community. Construction on the $75 million hospital expansion began in July 2010 with a projected opening date within the next three years.
