Section Chief, Breast Imaging & Intervention
Maria Pilar Martinez, M.D. is a Board-Certified diagnostic radiologist at Baptist Health South Florida and is a partner with Radiology Associates of South Florida. Dr. Martinez specializes in breast imaging and intervention and is the medical director of women’s and breast imaging at Baptist Outpatient Services. She is fluent in English and Spanish. During her tenure of nearly 23 years as chief of breast imaging and intervention, Dr. Martinez has overseen tremendous practice growth into what today is the largest breast imaging practice in Florida. Dr. Maria Pilar Martinez has collaborated on plans and implementation of multiple breast imaging facilities and breast biopsy programs including Femwell Diagnostic Center, South Miami Hospital, Baptist Outpatient facilities and more recently the Miami Cancer Institute. Dr. Martinez instituted the batch screening program that later developed into telemammography to meet growing practice demands and patient access. She also instituted a dedicated breast MRI program and the first MRI-guided biopsy program in South Florida. Dr. Martinez was responsible to oversee the transition from plain film mammography to Digital mammography and later 3D tomography program at Baptist Health South Florida. In tandem with mammography, breast ultrasound and MRI developments, Dr. Martinez has advanced the breast biopsy program to keep up with latest available technology. Dr. Maria Pilar Martinez oversaw the creation of the Mammogram Peer Review Program, Standardized Mammography Reporting
System, and is the lead interpreting physician in charge of FDA accreditation of Breast Imaging at BHSF. Dr. Martinez’s research has been published in the American Journal of Clinical Pathology. She has also presented at medical and community events. She is a member of the American College of Radiology, Society of Breast Imaging and Radiological Society of North America. Dr. Martinez’s care philosophy is to practice high-quality, science-based, patient-centered medicine. She believes in enabling patient access to multimodality treatment through effective communication and collaboration with other providers. When she is not treating patients, Dr. Martinez enjoys cooking for family and friends, traveling, reading, and gardening. She also has a special interest in causes for individuals with special needs.
